DeafACTS offers two Deaf Awareness Training packages:

  • Deaf Awareness Training
  • Deaf Awareness Training in the Workplace

Tailored to the needs of the client these one day courses are planned, written, produced for and delivered to the organization by DeafACTS . The courses combine presentation with interaction using case studies, attendee’s experiences, demonstration, and discussion in order to encourage the delegate to participate, voice concerns and develop best practice.

Both courses cover:

  • Distinction of types of deafness, individual needs and requirements and accompanying issues such as hearing loss related symptoms
  • Deaf culture Vs Hearing culture
  • The effects of discrimination and the DDA
  • Communication, including how to communicate, factors affecting communication, and communication support
  • Medical Vs Social model of Disability
  • Appropriate terms, language, and behaviour
  • Myths and misconceptions

Deaf Awareness Training in the workplace also covers:

  • DDA and Employment
  • Reasonable adjustments in the workplace including communication support and Access to Work
  • Accessibility of recruitment process and retention of Deaf/deafened employees

Comprehensive information packs are provided for each delegate containing handouts on the areas covered during the session, tips for communication with a lipreader, and a copy of the fingerspelling alphabet. Courses can be structured over half days or two days when required.

Disability Awareness Training is also provided in both workplace and non work related courses covering all of the topics stated above but with a focus on pan disability issues.
